Safely transporting fish requires careful planning and proper equipment to minimize stress and ensure survival. Temperature stability and oxygen levels are critical factors during transport.
Prepare fish by withholding food 24-48 hours before transport to reduce waste production. Use appropriate-sized bags or containers with rounded edges to prevent injury. Double-bag fish to prevent leaks, and fill bags 1/3 with water and 2/3 with air or pure oxygen for longer trips.
Maintain temperature stability using insulated containers or boxes. For longer journeys, use heat packs or ice packs depending on species requirements and ambient conditions. Add a small amount of stress coat or slime coat product to help protect fish during transport.
Minimize transport time when possible, and avoid sudden temperature changes or exposure to direct sunlight. When introducing fish to a new tank, float bags for temperature acclimation, then gradually add tank water to adjust to new water chemistry over 15-30 minutes.
